One of our appraisers just shared this sign – photo taken on the inside of an elevator in a Manhattan residential building.
Conclusions:
- Soothes panicked riders – by the time you finish reading the sign, help will have arrived.
- The elevator breaks down frequently enough to warrant extensive detailed instructions.
- I’d hate to see the author’s daily “to do” list. Must be 800 pages for a dozen items.

Our building had an elevator just like that — and the managing agent put up a similar sign. Here’s what they don’t say: –It will be hours before the mechanic shows, especially during winter or late night. –If you want to get out of the elevator asap, do the following: Call 911 and tell them you are trapped and scared as hell. When the fire department arrives, scream bloody murder and tell them you can you can’t take small space. They will immediately break down the door. I have found if tenants do this several times, the managing editor suddenly finds a way to get that elevator fixed fast.
